Having a movie dork boyfriend rubs off…

I wouldn’t call myself a movie fanatic. I’m too lazy to research the background infos of my favorite films AND I enjoy mainstream movies too much to be considered dork-worthy.

But can admit that my two favorite directors are Wes Anderson and Hayao Miyazaki.

Two very different directors from two very different countries, but their attention to detail is phenomenal.If you just pause at any scene, you’ll see how much little things the artists put into each character, room, background, etc.

SO COOL.

Note: For anyone who cares, watch From Up on Poppy Hill, by Miyazaki. It’s TOO sweet to miss!

Extra Note: I have a short break right now, so I put on an egg yolk mask! EWWW!!! I feel like I have botox.. my face is so stiff right now.. >.<;;

SDALI requires all teachers to do a short sermon during Friday Night Vespers. And tonight was my last one. I spoke about Daniel in the Lion’s Den, and it turns out that there’s a lot more to this simple children’s story than I thought.

Pardon my shoddy writing skills. It was over-simplified for Korean students who don’t know English nor God.

Daniel in the Lion’s Den

Once upon a time, when the Medo-Persian kingdom reigned the known world, there was a king named Darius. King Darius had 120 officials, called satraps, who managed his kingdom. And he also had three administrators who managed the satraps. One of these three administrators was a Jewish man named Daniel.

Daniel was the most exceptional administrators that King Darius had ever met. In fact, Daniel was so loyal, and so exceptional, that King Darius planned to let him manage the entire country!

As you can imagine, the other administrators and the satraps were not pleased to hear that. So they tried to find anything that they could charge against Daniel. Maybe some sort of tax fraud, insider trading, or bribe? But try as they did, the other rulers could not find any fault in Daniel’s record. Daniel was never corrupt, nor was he lazy. The man didn’t even smoke or drink!

The only thing that set Daniel apart was that he served a different God. While the Medo-Persians worshiped their own idols, and held their own ceremonies; Daniel continued to worship the God of Israel. He had a habit of praying three times a day, with his window opened towards the city of Jerusalem. Of course, there was no penalty for worshiping your own god at this time, but the other officials started to form a plot to use this against Daniel.

They presented a new law to the king,

^7 “The royal administrators… have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den. ⁸Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered…” ⁹So King Darius put the decree in writing.

The king, at the time, thought this was a great plan! How awesome would it feel to be a god for the next thirty days?

But this was terrible news for Daniel. Daniel wasn’t stupid. I’m sure he knew who was plotting against him at this time. What could he do? He could pray with the window closed. Or maybe he could pray silently while pretending to work. Or maybe he shouldn’t pray at all! It’s only thirty days, anyway. The law never said, “For all eternity”. It would be easier to avoid the problem, don’t you think? Who wants to get thrown into the lion’s den?

But Daniel believed God. Not because God would always guarantee his safety. Daniel believed God, because he knew that God loves him, and cares for him dearly. Daniel was okay with putting his life on the line for God, because he knew that God is worth it. God is worth more than his own life.

Society teaches us differently, doesn’t it? We are taught that our lives are precious, so we should do whatever we like. Make the best of our lives. Do what makes us happy. Me. Me. Me. I’m not saying that we are worthless. We should value our lives. But did you know that God values our lives WAYYY more than we value our own lives? That’s why Daniel had no problem with letting God handle everything. He knew that God would do a better job than him anyway.

So on the day that this law passed, Daniel went home as usual, opened his windows towards Jerusalem, as usual, and prayed to God. Just like he always did.

And just like that, the group of satraps and administrators who were spying on Daniel ran to the king saying…

¹³Then they said to the king, “Daniel… pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.”

When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed. He tried to find any way or loophole to try to save Daniel. But the problem was that King Darius had made a written decree, saying that all men should worship the King. A contract that is written and signed cannot be broken. And so, no matter what King Darius did, by law, Daniel was to be thrown into the lion’s den.

As Daniel was taken out, I wonder what he could have been thinking. If I were in his position, this is what I may have thought. Why is this happening to me, God? I’m innocent! I didn’t do anything wrong. In fact, I worked harder and more diligently than anyone else in this kingdom! It’s not fair, God!

The king was distraught. He couldn’t eat or sleep at all that night, because his friend was thrown into the lion’s den.

Early, the next morning, King Darius rushed to the lion’s den and opened it up. He called out,

“…Daniel… has your God… been able to rescue you from the lions?”

And from the den, Daniel cried out,

“…May the king live forever! ²²My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”

And the king was so overjoyed! He brought Daniel out and saw that there was not a single scratch on Daniel’s skin. The king then commanded that the men who falsely accused Daniel to be thrown into the lion’s den instead and the lions devoured them completely.

There are three main points that I want to focus on today.

1. Bad things can happen to good people. No matter how diligently you work, or how loyal you are, if someone wants to bring you down, they will find a way. In fact, they always find a way.

2. Trust God, no matter what kind of situation you’re in. Whether it’s good or bad.

Why should you trust God?

3. God values you more than you value yourselves. He will always find a way to take care of you. Always.

I want everyone here to remember that, because we live in a scary world, with scary people, and scary things. But God is so much bigger than that.

I’ve been really down on myself for the last few months or so because I gained back all the weight that I lost. Like, desperate enough to look up liposuction websites in Kangnam Seoul. Every time I saw a cosmetic surgery or lipo sign, my eyes grow wide with hope. If I can’t be skinny, I’ll pay my way!

Well, I should’ve expected it. Long winter + Comfort foods = PUDGE!!!

The reason why I lost weight in the first place was because I was adjusting to my new surroundings. But the thing is, it’s just too stressful to lose weight that way. I was constantly hungry/cranky/exhausted/sleepless etc. And I swear, I hate living life like that!

But I realized that no matter how much I work out, the real reason for weight gain is the stupid crap that I eat. (WOW. GENIUS, Soogerz.) But seriously! I don’t make good food for myself, so when I go out to eat (which is often) I have this “This is a huge treat, so I’m gonna eat all of it!” type of mentality! Not eating good, yummy, well-proportioned, NUTRITIOUS food at home made me think that any food that I buy OUTSIDE is a ‘treat’ or a ‘special occasion’ when in reality, it’s not.

I wentout to eat all the time. I ‘treated’ myself almost twice a day! Whether it was store bought Kimbap or a cookie or a latte.

And we all know that restaurant portions are even BIGGER than normal portions!

Then I realized, HEY! Why the heck am I eating like this? I can cook. And I can cook pretty damn well. So why not?

And now, I’m having so much fun looking up recipes, trying new foods, and actually using the stove. I managed to learn how to cook without carbs (except for the occasional oatmeal). There is literally no limit to what you can create, even with a small budget like me!

And I actually feel a lot better now. I haven’t done any detox or what not, but I’ve been eating cleaner. More raw foods. Fruits as snacks. Vitamin C drinks. Etc. I haven’t lost any weight, but now that I’m filled with actual nutrients, and not unnecessary calories, I actually have the energy to exercise again!

I do miss french fries. They are SO delicious. But I think I can live without. Not that fries are completely banned from my diet, but it’s good to stay away from them for now. *^^*

I’m still chubz. But today, I looked at myself in the mirror, and thought

How ungrateful! There are so many people who would KILL to have a healthy, fully-functioning body like mine…

I have a long way to go to be completely satisfied, but for the time being…

The concept of a food forest certainly pushes the envelope on urban agriculture and is grounded in the concept of permaculture, which means it will be perennial and self-sustaining, like a forest is in the wild.
